King Charles III will make history today as he becomes only the second British monarch to deliver the address at the state opening of the Canadian Parliament. His Majesty’s visit marks a significant moment in Canada’s constitutional history, reinforcing the enduring ties between the United Kingdom and Canada.

The King, accompanied by Queen Camilla, arrived in Ottawa on May 26 for a two-day visit. His address will outline the Canadian government’s priorities for the new parliamentary session, a tradition similar to the UK’s State Opening of Parliament. The speech is expected to highlight key initiatives, including economic growth, security, and Canada’s evolving relationship with the United States.

Prime Minister Mark Carney welcomed the King and Queen, emphasizing the importance of this visit in reaffirming Canada’s sovereignty and strengthening diplomatic relations. “His Majesty’s presence underscores the deep historical and cultural connections between our nations,” Carney stated.

During their stay, the royal couple engaged with Canadian citizens, participated in cultural events, and met with Indigenous leaders, showcasing their commitment to understanding and celebrating Canada’s diverse heritage.
