A man shouting “Free Palestine” attacked a peaceful demonstration in Boulder, Colorado, using what authorities describe as a makeshift flamethrower, injuring eight people, including seniors. The incident occurred during a Run for Their Lives march, an event advocating for the release of Israeli hostages held by Hamas.
The suspect, identified as Mohamed Sabry Soliman, 45, of El Paso County, Colorado, was apprehended at the scene. The FBI has confirmed that the attack is being investigated as an act of terrorism.
“There was a man with a weapon and people were being set on fire,” said Boulder Police Chief Stephen Redfearn.
According to police, the victims were four men and four women between the ages of 52 and 88 who were at or near the courthouse when they were targeted. Two are in critical condition, while the others suffered minor injuries.
Soliman, an Egyptian national, reportedly wore work clothing to blend in before the attack. Investigators are still combing through his background and social media but have not yet determined a clear motive or ideological affiliation. Law enforcement officials said Soliman acted alone and has no significant criminal history.
“It’s way too early to speculate motive,” said Chief Redfearn, noting that it remains unclear if the attacker specifically targeted the hostage awareness group.
Run for Their Lives, which organized the demonstration, solely focused on advocating for the release of the remaining hostages taken during the October 7, 2023, Hamas attack on Israel. Israeli officials say 23 hostages are believed to still be alive.
FBI Director Kash Patel referred to the assault as a “targeted terror attack” on X (formerly Twitter). Federal agents are now leading the investigation alongside local law enforcement.
Downtown Boulder was temporarily cordoned off as authorities investigated a vehicle possibly linked to the suspect.
