Who is Olayide Adelami? 9 things to Know About Ondo Deputy Governor-Nominee

The nominee for the position of deputy governor of Ondo State, Olayide Owolabi Adelami, is scheduled to undergo screening before the Ondo State House of Assembly today.

The speaker of the Ondo Assembly, Olamide Oladiji, announced this during Wednesday’s plenary after reading a letter from Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa, which informed the lawmakers of the nomination of Olayide Adelami as the state’s deputy governor.

The nomination is to fill the role of deputy governor of the state, which has been vacant since December 27, 2023, when Lucky Aiyedatiwa replaced former governor Rotimi Akeredolu, following the death of the latter.

Here are 9 things to know about the Ondo Deputy Governor-Nominee:

1. Olayide Adelami was born to the family of Oluka Oribokun by Pa and Mrs Amos Adelami and hails from Owo, Owo local government area (the same hometown as the late former Governor, Rotimi Akeredolu).

2. Adelami graduated from the prestigious Imade College in Owo before proceeding to The Polytechnic, Ibadan for his GCE A level and University of Lagos for his Bachelor of Science in Business Administration. He further got an MBA degree from Ogun State University.

3. After the completion of the mandatory one-year National Youth Service Corps, in June 1983, Adelami was enlisted into the Federal Civil Service as an Accountant II in December 1983.

4. He resumed to the Treasury Department of the Accountant General of the Federation office and in 1988 was posted to the National Assembly Provisional Office, Abuja as one of the pioneer staff of the Constituent Assembly which metamorphosed into the present-day National Assembly. In the discharge of his duty, Adelami had the privilege of setting up the Finance and Accounts Department of the National Assembly.

5. In 1996, he was invited to help in setting up the Accounts Department of the Petroleum Special Trust Fund.

6. Adelami was recalled to the National Assembly in 2000 to strengthen the Finance Department. Three years later, he was made the Head of the Finance and Accounts Department.

7.  In 2014, Adelami was promoted to the position of Permanent Secretary at the Directorate of Procurement, Estate and Works. He held this position until he was appointed as the Deputy Clerk to the National Assembly, before retiring in April 2018.

8. In 2020, Adelami was an APC governorship aspirant before stepping down for the late Akeredolu.

9. On January 24, 2020, Adelami was nominated by Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa to the position of Deputy Governor.
