Supreme Court Affirms Election Victory of Rivers, Taraba and Sokoto Governors

The Supreme Court has dismissed the appeal of Tonye Cole and the All Progressives Congress challenging the election of Siminalayi Fubara as Rivers State governor.

The Court affirmed Fubara as the duly elected governor of Rivers State and held that Tonye Cole did not prove the allegations of non-compliance with the Electoral Act, among others.

The court held that the appeal was incompetent and dismissed it.

The apex court also affirmed the election of Agbu Kefas as Governor of Taraba State.

The Supreme Court in a unanimous decision dismissed the appeal by Yahaya Sani of the New Nigerian People’s Party for “grossly lacking in merit”. Sani had alleged non-compliance of the election with the Electoral Act, irregularities, and other malpractices.

In the final case of the day, the Supreme Court affirmed the election of Ahmed Aliyu as the Governor of Sokoto State, dismissing the appeal of Saidu Umar of the Peoples Democratic Party.

Justice Tijani Abubakar delivered the judgement of the apex court panel led by Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun.

The affirmation of the 3 state governors, comes after the recent Supreme Court cases which have upheld the election victories of several state governors in recent weeks.
