Nigerian Afrobeat sensation, Ayra Starr, has extended an apology following criticism surrounding a viral video where she casually greeted veteran juju singer, King Sunny Ade, at a recent event.

The self-proclaimed Sabi Girl faced social media backlash, with some deeming her actions as disrespectful and unbecoming of a cultured Nigerian lady.

Ayra Starr addressed the situation, expressing regret for any offence caused and providing context to the incident.

In a post on the social media platform (X) on Saturday, January 27, 2024, the Mavin Records signee explained that due to the event’s bright lights and nerves, she initially failed to recognize King Sunny Ade. However, on realizing her mistake, she promptly returned to greet everyone properly.

In her post, she stated, “I’m so sorry; I had just walked in, and all the lights and nerves didn’t let me see, but I came back around to greet everyone properly. I have never been that girl to be disrespectful. I’m a proper Yoruba girl, and the video didn’t start until after I’d greeted Burna’s mom! I’m very sorry to the legend, uncle, and King Sunny Ade”.
