Organizer of the Headies Awards, Ayo Animashaun, has announced that the prestigious awards ceremony will return to Nigeria, with the 17th edition to be held this year.
The 16th edition of the Headies was held in the United States, but will now return home. This decision comes in the wake of Nigerian artists’ failure to win at the Grammy Awards, prompting a renewed focus on celebrating the country’s vibrant music scene.
Emphasizing Nigeria’s pivotal role in the global rise of Afrobeats, Animashaun highlighted the importance of recognizing and honouring the talents emerging from the country.
Additionally, he addressed the choice to host the previous edition of The Headies in the United States, explaining that it provided an opportunity to showcase Nigerian talent on an international platform.
The Headies, also known as the Hip Hop World Awards, was established in 2006 by the Hip Hop World Magazine of Nigeria to honour outstanding achievements in the Nigerian music industry.
