Lassa Fever Kills Four People at Army Hospital in Kaduna State

Four people have been confirmed dead at the 44 Nigerian Army Reference Hospital in Kaduna state from the outbreak of acute viral Heamophatric Fever popularly called Lassa Fever.

Reports say the Lassa fever resulted in the death of three medical staff serving in the hospital and a patient, with some others in critical condition.

The Army Headquarters while confirming the deaths in a statement, said the three medical staff of the hospital that had direct contact with the suspected index case have also died within the past 48 hours.

Army spokesperson, Major General Onyema Nwachukwu, said the suspected index patient was managed but subsequently died two weeks ago in the hospital.

The Army also said there was no cause for alarm over the incident.

Meanwhile, Kaduna state Governor Uba Sani has directed the Kaduna State Ministry of Health to immediately investigate and ascertain the situation at the health facility.

The Governor in a statement, added that “a surveillance team was promptly mobilized to assess the situation and containment measures were initiated alongside the hospital management”.
