Multi-award-winning Nigerian superstar, Davido, recently made a guest appearance on The Bridge alongside Real Madrid midfielder, Aurelian Thouameni, Cindy Bruna, and François-Henry Bennahmias.

During the show, Davido delved into his early days signing with global record label Sony Music in 2016 and the hurdles he faced in proving himself to those unfamiliar with his success.

Reflecting on his journey, Davido revealed that he signed with Sony Music shortly after selling out a stadium in Mali, emphasizing the challenge of introducing himself to a new audience. He explained how signing a new deal abroad meant having to answer questions about his identity and music style, despite his superstar status in Africa.

The Nigerian musician disclosed his disappointment with his 2016 EP ‘Son of Mercy‘, despite featuring popular tracks like ‘Skelewu’, ‘How Long‘ featuring Tinashe, and ‘Coolest Kid in Africa‘ featuring South African rapper Nasty C.

Davido expressed that while ‘Skelewu’ resonated locally, the EP fell short of his standards as a hitmaker, particularly in penetrating the US market.

The music star also shared insights into his creative process, highlighting how he returned to Lagos to collaborate with local producers and create new music. One of the standout tracks from this period was ‘IF‘, produced and co-written by Tekno.

Throughout the 1 hour 22 minutes interview, Davido also discussed the evolution of Nigerian music, acknowledging the sacrifices made by the first generation of stars and the ongoing efforts of current artists to pave the way for future generations.
