In a surprising turn of events, Minister of Women Affairs Uju Kennedy-Ohanenye has reversed her initial opposition to the mass wedding of 100 female orphans in Niger State, instead opting to support the initiative

According to her aide, Adaji Usman, the minister will provide scholarships and various gift items to the 100 brides on their wedding day, March 24.

Previously, Kennedy-Ohanenye had expressed concerns about the wedding, citing potential violations of the Child Rights Act.

However, she now attributes the initial controversy to miscommunication and media escalation.

The minister clarified that her intention was not to stop the marriage but to ensure the girls were of legal age and consenting to the union.

Kennedy-Ohanenye has commended Niger House of Assembly Speaker Abdulmalik Sarkindaji for his support and promised to monitor the girls’ well-being in their new homes to ensure the empowerment scheme’s objectives are met.

The minister’s donations include scholarships, wrappers, foodstuffs, and the opening of bank accounts for each bride, into which a stipend will be deposited to support their transition into married life.
