BREAKING: Nigerian Labour Unions, NLC, TUC Declare Nationwide Strike Over New Minimum Wage

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) have announced a nationwide strike, effective Monday, June 3, 2024, due to the tripartite committee’s failure to reach an agreement on a new minimum wage.

This decision was made public by TUC President Festus Osifo during a joint press conference with NLC leadership in Abuja on Friday.

According to the labour leaders, this action follows the expiration of their earlier request to the Federal Government to conclude negotiations for a new minimum wage by the end of May.

As reported by SaharaReporters, the NLC and TUC leadership had previously threatened to cripple the economy if the government failed to offer workers a living wage, as demanded during the May Day celebration.

The organised labour had given a stern warning to the government after talks on the minimum wage among tripartite committee members collapsed, leading to an indefinite adjournment of the meeting.

Two weeks ago, the labour leadership walked out on government representatives for offering Nigerian workers what they deemed a paltry N48,000.

Although the government representatives later increased the minimum wage offer to N54,000, this amount was still deemed unacceptable by the labour centres.
