Vice President Kashim Shettima has emphasized that good governance, rather than a change in the system of governance, is the key to Nigeria’s progress.

Speaking at the 30th anniversary of Yusuf Ali & Co in Ilorin, Kwara State, he stressed that democracy can only thrive through adherence to the rule of law and quality governance, not by adopting a parliamentary system.

He warned that lack of access to truth and justice can lead to the downfall of nations, citing examples of countries that collapsed due to frustrated access to justice.

Shettima also addressed the recent electoral process, stating that President Bola Tinubu did not influence the outcome and that the presidency did not use its power to persecute opponents.

Former Minister of Works, Raji Fashola, echoed Shettima’s sentiments, noting that Nigeria had previously tried a parliamentary system without success, leading to “unwarranted disaster.”

Fashola suggested focusing on liberal democracy to improve Nigerians’ livelihood rather than advocating for a change in government structure, which he believes is driven by economic interests.

He emphasized that with sincerity and effective governance, the current system can still deliver better lives for all.
