Women’s World Cup: Nigeria beats Australia 3-2 to go top of Group B

The Super Falcons on Thursday defeated co-host Australia 3-2 at the Brisbane Stadium in their second match of the ongoing FIFA Women’s World Cup.

Australia took the lead via a first half stoppage strike from Emily van Egmond, with the Falcons replying 6 minutes later with an equalizing goal from Uchenna Kanu.

In the second half, Osinachi Ohale (who was voted player of the match) scored within 20 minutes of restart, while star striker Asisat Oshoala scored the third goal for the Falcons a few minutes after coming on from the substitutes bench. And although Australia scored a late goal from Alanna Kennedy in second half stoppage time, the Falcons held on to record Africa’s first win in the current competition.

With her goal, Oshoala has become the first player to score for Nigeria in 3 women’s World Cup editions.

With the win, the Super Falcons chance of reaching the round of 16 have been boosted after Canada secured a 2-1 victory against Ireland on Wednesday.

The Super Falcons top Group B with 4 points (same as Canada), with a draw against the Republic of Ireland in their last group match enough to see them qualify for the knockout rounds.
