Murray and team-mate Dan Evans lost in straight sets to Taylor Fritz and Tommy Paul of the United States to crash out of the Paris Olympics at the quarter-final stage.

Until that point it had been a miraculous tournament for the Team GB pair.

They saved five match points before fighting back to beat Japan’s Taro Daniel and Kei Nishikori on Sunday, then save another two to win against Belgian pair Sander Gille and Joran Vliegen.

Before Wednesday’s game, Murray’s Twitter bio had read ‘I play tennis’. But following his and Evans’ defeat to the Americans’ the two-time Wimbledon champion changed it to ‘I played tennis.’

He also added a cheeky message to his fans by tweeting: “Never even liked tennis anyway.”

Murray’s career ends with the 37-year-old having won Wimbledon twice, the US Open once and claimed two Olympics gold medals.

He has entered retirement as Britain’s greatest tennis player of the modern era. Murray was understandably emotional after his defeat, entering the court to pay tribute to the fans who gave him a standing ovation.
