The Head of Oyo Princes, Chief Mukaila Afonja, has clarified that the Alaafin-elect, Prince Akeem Owoade, has not yet commenced the traditional rites associated with his coronation. He assured that all customary practices will begin immediately upon the new monarch’s return from Canada.
Speaking in a telephone interview with Vanguard, Chief Afonja explained that Prince Owoade traveled abroad to finalize his resignation from his previous employment. He emphasized that the seclusion rites, an essential part of the coronation process, would commence once the Alaafin-elect is back in Nigeria.
Prince Owoade was recently presented with a certificate and staff of office by Governor Seyi Makinde at a ceremony held at the Executive Chamber of the Governor’s Office. During the event, Governor Makinde warned against any attempts to disrupt the selection process, vowing to prosecute those allegedly involved in fraudulent activities.
Following the presentation, the Alaafin-elect received a warm welcome from Oyo indigenes upon his arrival in the city. However, reports of his travel to Canada sparked speculation about delays in the traditional rites.
Addressing these concerns, Chief Afonja stated, “The Alaafin-elect has only received the certificate and staff of office. The seclusion rites will be performed upon his return. When he is back, he will enter Ipebi (seclusion), undergo all necessary rites, and prepare for the coronation scheduled for April.”
He further explained that the seclusion process would last for nearly 30 days, during which the new Alaafin will undergo lessons and tutelage in preparation for his role.
A source from the ancient city dismissed rumors that Ifa priests and traditionalists were reluctant to perform the rites, citing adjustments made to traditional practices in light of modern realities.
“In the past, a newly selected king would immediately enter seclusion for 21 days and remain there until all rites were completed. However, modernity has influenced some adjustments. The rites will still be observed in full, but the process has been adapted to accommodate current circumstances,” the source noted.
The coronation of the 46th Alaafin of Oyo is expected to take place in April, following the completion of all traditional and cultural protocols.
