The Anambra State Aids Control Agency (ANSACA) has reported that 3,138 individuals tested positive for HIV out of 257,953 people tested between January and October 2024.
Dr. Afam Obidike, the Commissioner for Health in Anambra, shared these statistics on Thursday in Awka during a media briefing to mark World AIDS Day, observed annually on December 1 since 1988.
World AIDS Day serves as a global occasion to raise awareness about HIV and AIDS and honor the lives impacted by the epidemic. This year’s theme was: āTake the Rights Path, Sustain HIV Response, Stop HIV Among Children to End AIDS in Nigeria by 2030ā.
Obidike highlighted the state’s progress in the fight against HIV/AIDS, noting the extension of comprehensive services to 175 healthcare facilities across Anambra.
He stated, āFrom January to October 2024, a total of 257,953 individuals were tested for HIV, with 3,138 (1.2%) testing positive. An impressive 99% of those who tested positive have been successfully linked to antiretroviral therapy (ART). Currently, 49,067 individuals living with HIV are receiving ART.ā
As part of HIV prevention efforts, the state, with support from its partners, has distributed 1,406,744 condoms and 26,640 lubricants to promote safe practices among key populations and the general public.
āThese distributions reflect the state and its partnersā dedication to reducing transmission risks and supporting comprehensive prevention strategies,ā Obidike added.
