Whether audiences were caught up in the controversy surrounding Emilia Pérez or enchanted by the Wicked magic, the 97th Academy Awards brought the 2025 awards season to a thrilling conclusion on Sunday night. Hosted for the first time by Conan O’Brien, the ceremony saw Anora take center stage, winning five Oscars, including Best Picture.
Sean Baker, who had never won an Oscar before the event, made history by taking home four awards in a single night—the most for any individual film. In addition to producing Anora, which won Best Picture, Baker also claimed trophies for Best Director, Best Original Screenplay, and Best Film Editing.
On the acting front, Mikey Madison (Anora) triumphed in the hotly contested Best Actress race against Demi Moore (The Substance). While Moore had racked up several early-season wins, Madison gained momentum with key victories at the BAFTA Awards and the Independent Spirit Awards, ultimately securing her first Oscar.
Best Actor was another closely watched battle, with Timothée Chalamet (A Complete Unknown) emerging as a strong contender against Adrien Brody (The Brutalist). In the end, Brody won his second Academy Award for his performance.
Kieran Culkin (A Real Pain) and Zoe Saldaña (Emilia Pérez) both completed their dominant awards-season runs by winning Best Supporting Actor and Best Supporting Actress, respectively.
A historic moment came in the Best Costume Design category, where Paul Tazewell (Wicked) became the first Black man to win in this category. Meanwhile, legendary songwriter Diane Warren made headlines for an unfortunate reason—she extended her Oscars losing streak after her 16th consecutive defeat in the Best Original Song category.
The evening featured several standout moments, including a reunion between The Color Purple stars Whoopi Goldberg and Oprah Winfrey, who introduced a musical tribute to Quincy Jones led by Queen Latifah. The show opened with Wicked stars Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo performing a Wizard of Oz-themed medley.
Special honorees at this year’s ceremony included Honorary Award recipients Juliet Taylor and Quincy Jones, Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award winner Richard Curtis, and Irving G. Thalberg Memorial Award recipients Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson, recognized for their contributions to the James Bond franchise.
