The Nigerian Army has renamed the popular Ikeja Cantonment in Lagos after the late Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lt.-Gen. Taoreed Lagbaja, in recognition of his service and dedication. The facility will now be known as T.A. Lagbaja Cantonment, Ikeja.
The renaming ceremony, held yesterday, coincided with Lagbaja’s posthumous 57th birthday and was attended by top military officers, including his coursemates from Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA) Course 39.
As part of the upgrades to the cantonment, a striking portrait of Lagbaja made with over 400,000 nails was unveiled at the refurbished main gate. Other enhancements include digital boards, remodeled accommodation for the Commander of 9 Brigade, a newly built residence for the Commander of 70 Supply and Transport Command, and renovated quarters for both Corporals and Senior Non-Commissioned Officers (SNCOs).
Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, who delivered a goodwill message at the event, described the renaming as a testament to Lagbaja’s courage, service, and patriotism.
“Lieutenant General Lagbaja’s contributions to Nigeria’s security, his leadership in counterterrorism, and his unwavering professionalism in the Nigerian Army are worthy of honour. His name will now be permanently etched in this cantonment as a reminder of the values we uphold—service, excellence, and selflessness,” Sanwo-Olu said.
He also assured continued government support for security agencies through infrastructural development and welfare initiatives.
Addressing Lagbaja’s wife, Mrs. Mariam Lagbaja, Sanwo-Olu encouraged her to take pride in her husband’s legacy, stating that he was a leader who served with dedication and professionalism.
