Arsenal Edges Shakhtar Donetsk 1-0 in Champions League Thriller

Arsenal secured a hard-fought 1-0 victory against Shakhtar Donetsk in the Champions League, maintaining their unbeaten start to the league phase.

The decisive goal came in the 30th minute, courtesy of an own goal from Shakhtar goalkeeper Dmytro Riznyk. Martinelli’s shot hit the post and rebounded off Riznyk’s back into the net.

Gabriel Jesus created an early chance with a low cross into the six-yard box, but it was intercepted. Riccardo Calafiori then missed a gilt-edged opportunity from eight yards out. Leandro Trossard had two half-chances, but his shots went off target.

In the second half, Trossard missed a penalty, saved by Riznyk’s feet. David Raya made a stunning injury-time save to deny Pedrinho. Mikel Merino and Raheem Sterling were introduced at halftime and later, respectively.

Arsenal secured seven points from nine in the new-look League phase, keeping them in fifth place before Wednesday’s matches. This was Arsenal’s first penalty miss at home since December 2021.

The narrow victory showcased Arsenal’s resilience and determination, setting them up for a strong Champions League campaign.
