At least 10 people have died and several others have been injured in a stampede at the Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Maitama, Abuja, on Saturday morning.

The tragic event occurred during a palliative distribution organized by the church to assist residents of nearby communities such as Mpape and Gishiri Village.

Eyewitnesses reported that the stampede took place between 7 a.m. and 8 a.m. as the crowd pushed forward to collect the relief items.

One witness, who wished to remain anonymous, described the scene as chaotic. “There were so many people, and everyone was desperate to get something. Before we knew it, people started falling and stepping on each other. It was terrible,” the witness recalled.

The spokesperson for the FCT Emergency Management Department, Mrs. Nkechi Isa, had not responded to inquiries about the incident at the time of this report.

This tragedy follows a similar incident in Ibadan, Oyo State, just days earlier, where at least 35 children died and six others were critically injured in a stampede at a children’s funfair.
