Atiku Abubakar Accuses Senate President Akpabio of Corruption and Abuse of Women

Former Vice President of Nigeria, Atiku Abubakar, has made strong allegations against Senate President Godswill Akpabio, accusing him of corruption and a history of abusing women.

Speaking in an interview with Adesuwa Giwa-Osagie of Untold Stories, Atiku claimed he has long known Akpabio to be involved in misconduct against women.

Akpabio has previously faced accusations of sexual harassment from at least two women who worked with him. One of the most notable allegations came from Joy Nunieh, the former Managing Director of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC). She claimed that Akpabio harassed her during his tenure as Minister of the NDDC and revealed that she once slapped him in self-defense.

More recently, Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, who represents Kogi Central, also accused Akpabio of harassment. She alleged that during her brief time in the Senate before her suspension, Akpabio repeatedly propositioned her, promising influential positions in exchange for compliance with his advances.

When asked about Akpabio’s character, Atiku stated, “Not only was he corrupt, but he was also in the habit of abusing women.”

Atiku on Opposition Coalition and 2027 Elections

During the interview, Atiku also spoke about the possibility of forming a coalition among opposition parties ahead of the 2027 elections. While he did not confirm whether he would run for president again, he hinted at the likelihood of another political merger.

“You know we had a similar merger in 2014, with about four of us. Or was it two or three? We all ran for president, and one of us emerged, and we supported the winner,” he recalled.

He further emphasized the need for strong leadership in Nigeria, stating, “I have not seen Nigeria in more dire need of an experienced and credible leader than now.”

Atiku Reacts to State of Emergency in Rivers State

Atiku also commented on President Bola Tinubu’s declaration of a State of Emergency in Rivers State, criticizing the National Assembly’s approval of the move.

“I was not surprised because I know the leadership is corrupt, and I have no apologies about that. The Senate is known for having individuals of that character, even when Akpabio was a governor,” he said.

Atiku’s remarks have sparked fresh debates about corruption and leadership integrity within the Nigerian government, particularly in the upper chamber of the National Assembly.
