In a groundbreaking political development aimed at reshaping Nigeria’s future, former Vice President and 2023 presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, has offered Labour Party leader Mr. Peter Obi the position of Vice President in a proposed unity ticket for the 2027 presidential election. Atiku has also pledged to serve only a single term if elected president.
The proposal, which signals a strategic alliance between two of Nigeria’s most influential opposition figures, is part of a broader effort to forge a formidable coalition to challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and usher in a new era of political inclusiveness, economic reform, and national unity.
Speaking through a senior campaign aide on Monday, Atiku emphasized the urgency of a united front to address Nigeria’s deepening economic and security challenges. “This is not just about winning an election; it is about rescuing Nigeria. Alhaji Atiku is prepared to serve only one term, during which he will focus on restructuring the country and laying the foundation for a stable, prosperous future,” the aide stated.
In the proposed partnership, Mr. Obi—widely respected for his fiscal prudence and youth appeal—would play a central role in shaping economic policy and governance reforms. The alliance seeks to unify the North-South voting blocs, drawing strength from both leaders’ extensive followings.
Obi, who placed third in the 2023 presidential election under the Labour Party banner, has not yet formally responded to the offer. However, sources close to the former Anambra State Governor describe the ongoing discussions as “constructive and promising.”
