Atiku plans to support Peter Obi, should zoning go to South-East

Atiku Abubakar, the 2023 presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has expressed his willingness to support Peter Obi if the party decides to zone the presidential ticket to the South-East in 2027.

In a recent interview with the BBC Hausa Service, Atiku stated that he would readily offer his support to Peter Obi if he becomes the party’s candidate.

He reiterated his commitment to the party’s decision, saying, “I have consistently stated that if the PDP decides to zone the presidential ticket to the South or South-East, I will not contest it. I will abide by the party’s decision.”

Atiku also hinted at a possible merger between the PDP and the Labour Party, stating that “it’s very much possible” and that “nothing can stop it if we wish to achieve that.”

He added that his recent meeting with Peter Obi was a “normal friendly meeting” among opposition parties, which is “healthy for Nigeria’s democracy and in the country’s interest.”

The meeting between Atiku and Obi has sparked speculation about a possible coalition for the 2027 general elections.

Peter Obi also met separately with other PDP leaders, including former Jigawa State Governor Sule Lamido and former Senate President Bukola Saraki, fueling rumors of a potential alliance.

However, Atiku emphasized that his fate in the 2027 elections would be decided by the party members.
