Popular Afrobeats star Ayra Starr is under heavy criticism for a recent social media post that many have called insensitive, given the ongoing controversy surrounding a Lagos-based National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member.

The singer shared two stylish photos of herself in a black gown on X, expecting admiration from fans. However, the post sparked backlash, as critics accused her of ignoring pressing national issues, particularly the plight of an NYSC member who recently spoke out against inflation and the hardships faced by corps members under President Bola Tinubu’s administration.

The corps member’s viral video, in which she also mocked Lagos for its alleged bad odor, led to public outrage and reports that she was facing threats from NYSC officials. Amid the heated debate, Ayra Starr’s post was seen as tone-deaf, drawing strong reactions from social media users.

One user, @Obaji_esq, criticized her, saying, “Can’t you see that today is about calling out bad government? Can’t you use your platform for once and talk about the real issues? Must you post your face and body?”

Another user, @PapiJruee, urged her to speak up, writing, “Do you know how much love you’d get if you wielded the power you have over social media to help amplify the cries of your fans? Oyinkan, don’t stay silent. It concerns you too.”

Similarly, @KlasickTheHost slammed the singer, saying, “The country is in a mess, and you’re here posting about your nakedness. You haven’t said anything about the young NYSC corper being threatened for calling out the government! You should read the room, girl!”

As the criticism continues, Ayra Starr has yet to respond to the backlash.
