Ayra Starr Urges Nigerians: “Let’s Stop Telling Girls To Show Up Less”

Nigerian singer Ayra Starr has advocated for women to embrace their confidence without reservation.

During her appearance on the Oui Oui Baguette show hosted by Sally, Ayra Starr offered advice to black women and girls, emphasizing the importance of hard work and self-assurance.

“My advice to black girls and black women is to work hard. The effort women put into this industry is distinct, and they work tirelessly. And I’d say, don’t downplay it. That’s where we need to begin,” expressed the singer.

Addressing societal norms in Nigeria, Ayra Starr highlighted the need for girls to freely express themselves without facing criticism for being too bold.

“I feel like we are raised to be modest in Nigeria. When a girl begins to grow and gains confidence, people often say ‘too much shakara.’ They’re told they have too much confidence and should tone it down. Let’s stop that. Let’s stop discouraging girls from being confident. Let’s stop telling them to be less visible and not wear their brightest clothes because ‘they like too much shakara,’” she urged.
