Bishop Charles Ighele Calls for Ban on Valentine’s Day in Nigeria, Labels It a “Universal Day of Immorality”

Bishop Charles Ighele, General Superintendent of the Holy Spirit Mission, has called for the prohibition of Valentine’s Day celebrations in Nigeria, arguing that the holiday has strayed from its original purpose of promoting charity and goodwill.

In an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), Ighele expressed concerns that Valentine’s Day now fuels immoral behavior, encouraging illicit sexual activities and unhealthy romantic relationships.

He linked the holiday to Cupid, the Roman god of love, claiming it incites sexual desires and promotes erotic entertainment. Describing it as a “deception from the devil,” Ighele urged authorities to take action, emphasizing the negative influence on young people.

“The day is associated with a romantic demon known as Cupid, one of the rulers of darkness, as mentioned in Ephesians 6:11-12,” he stated.

He stressed the need for a collective effort from the government, religious bodies, educational institutions, and families to instill positive social values and discourage the observance of Valentine’s Day in Nigeria.
