‘Black Panther’ actress Connie Chiume dies at 72

The Black Panther star’s d3ath has been announced by her family. She died at a Johannesburg hospital on Tuesday afternoon.

Chiume, who is a multi-award-winning South African actress, starred in numerous South African TV shows like Rhythm City, Zone 14 and Gomora.

Her son Nongelo told Newzroom Afrika that his mum was admitted for a “medial procedure” before her d3ath.

In a statement on Instagram, Chiume’s family wrote: “The Chiume Family regrets to inform you of the passing of the internationally acclaimed award-winning actress Connie Chiume.

Connie Chiume, 72, passed on at Garden City Hospital today on 6 August 2024. The Family asks for privacy during this difficult period. The family will communicate further details.”

The family have asked for privacy at this time and said more details will follow. Chiume appeared in blockbuster movie Black Panther as a Mining Tribe Elder named Zawavari and its sequel Black Panther: Wakanda Forever where she replaced Zuri (Forest Whitaker) as Wakanda’s Elder Statesman. Chiume not only starred in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but also Beyonce’s 2020 musical film Black is King.
