The Borno State High Court in Maiduguri has sentenced Aisha Wakil, widely known as Mama Boko Haram, to five years imprisonment for fraud.

Ms. Wakil, alongside Tahiru Daura, Programme Manager, and Prince Shoyode, Country Director of her NGO, Complete Care and Aid Foundation, was convicted on 28 November by Justice Aisha Kumaliya.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) prosecuted the case, accusing the defendants of defrauding Bukar Kachalla, owner of Abks Ventures, by dishonestly obtaining a Toyota Camry 2012 model worth ₦6 million, which was neither paid for nor returned.

Initially arraigned on 1 September 2020, the defendants pleaded not guilty to four amended charges of conspiracy, cheating, and providing false information. During the trial, the EFCC presented three witnesses and submitted various documents as evidence.

Justice Kumaliya sentenced each defendant to five years imprisonment with no option of a fine. The court also ordered them to jointly refund ₦3.5 million to the petitioner, failing which they would serve an additional five years in prison.
