The Libyan Football Federation (LFF) has been fined $50,000 by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) for misconduct during the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.
The incident occurred after Libya played a goalless draw against Benin in Benghazi, allowing Benin to qualify for the continental tournament. Angered by the outcome, Libyan fans resorted to throwing stones and bottles at the visiting team.
Benin head coach Gernot Rohr revealed that his players and officials suffered assaults from fans and police after the final whistle.
In its statement, the CAF Disciplinary Board found the LFF guilty of violating Articles 82 and 151 of the CAF Disciplinary Code due to the behavior of its supporters and officials during and after the match.
As a result, the LFF has been fined $50,000 and ordered to play its next two official national team matches behind closed doors.
This is the second time in recent months that the LFF has faced sanctions. Earlier, the federation was fined $50,000 after a botched game against the Nigerian Super Eagles, during which the Nigerian team was stranded at Al-Abraq International Airport for over 20 hours, eventually leading to the abandonment of the match.
