Canada Orders TikTok to Shut Down Business Operations Over National Security Concerns

The Canadian government has ordered TikTok to shut down its business operations in Canada following a national security review. However, Canadians will still be able to use the app, as the government’s order only restricts TikTok from conducting business within the country.

Industry Minister François-Philippe Champagne announced the decision on Wednesday, explaining that the order aims to mitigate risks associated with ByteDance Ltd., the Chinese parent company behind TikTok, which had established TikTok Technology Canada Inc.

Champagne noted that the decision was based on findings and advice from Canada’s security and intelligence agencies, along with other government partners.

Despite TikTok’s Canadian business operations closing, Canadians will continue to have access to the app and can still create accounts and browse content. However, the government has advised Canadians to practice good cybersecurity habits and remain aware of potential risks when using social media platforms.
