Chelsea Crashes Out of Carabao Cup with 2-0 Loss to Newcastle

Chelsea’s hopes of advancing in the Carabao Cup were dashed as they fell 2-0 to Newcastle United at St James’ Park.

Newcastle struck twice in three minutes midway through the first half, with Alexander Isak and Axel Disasi’s own goal sealing Chelsea’s fate.

Enzo Maresca’s decision to make 11 changes to the lineup that beat Newcastle 2-1 on Sunday backfired, as Chelsea struggled to match the hosts’ intensity.

Joelinton nearly opened the scoring in the second minute, hitting the post, and Chelsea’s defensive vulnerabilities were exposed throughout.

Joao Felix was Chelsea’s lone bright spot, testing Newcastle’s defense with his runs, but his efforts were ultimately fruitless.

Newcastle continued to press, with Willock, Osula, and Longstaff all threatening to add to the scoreline. Longstaff’s goal was disallowed for offside.

Chelsea now turns its attention to Premier League action, facing Manchester United on Sunday and hosting FC Noah in the Europa Conference League next Thursday.
