The Federal High Court in Abuja has issued an arrest warrant for Hathiramani Ranesh, managing director of Dana Air, after he failed to appear for trial.

Presiding judge Obiora Egwuatu granted the order on Monday, following a motion from the attorney-general of the federation (AGF). Ranesh, along with Dana Group PLC and Dana Steel Ltd, faces a six-count charge, including alleged fraud involving N1.3 billion.

During the hearing, Judge Egwuatu inquired about Ranesh’s absence. His lawyer, Ademola Bello, explained that Ranesh was abroad, noting that Dana Group PLC and Dana Steel Ltd are also defendants under Ranesh’s management. Bello requested that the court address jurisdictional issues raised in their preliminary objection.

Judge Egwuatu expressed frustration over the absence, questioning the respect shown to the court. Bello cited section 266 of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act 2015, urging the court to consider its provisions.

However, the judge upheld the arrest order, stating that the first defendant is legally required to appear in court.

“The 1st defendant is bound to appear before the court, and if he does not, the court can issue a warrant for his arrest,” Egwuatu stated. He ordered Ranesh to appear in court on January 13, 2025, before addressing any objections.

The charges, filed under case number FHC/ABJ/CR/101/2021, involve significant alleged fraudulent activities. This decision follows a previous request by the AGF’s counsel, Mojisola Okeya, on October 10, seeking Ranesh’s arrest for missing an earlier arraignment.
