Crisis Rocks Rivers State, as House of Assembly Plot to Impeach Governor Fubara

A fresh crisis is brewing in the Rivers State House of Assembly amidst speculations of an impending impeachment procedure against the state Governor Sim Fubara.

It started on Sunday night when the Assembly building complex caught fire mysteriously with the inferno burning down several parts of the building.

The fire was reportedly orchestrated by loyalists to the Governor, who wanted to prevent the removal of the Majority Leader, Edison Ehie, an ally of the Governor.

However, during plenary on Monday, Edison Ehie was removed from his post.

Shortly after, Governor Fubara stormed the Assembly complex and said he had not committed any offence to warrant impeachment by the House of Assembly.

However, Police officers fired teargas outside the building, allegedly directly at Fubara.

“Let them come out and tell Rivers people the offence I have committed to warrant any impeachment.

“Let me assure the people of Rivers that I will continue to ensure that you get the dividends of democracy. At the appropriate time I will address the press”.

The Governor also declared that the alleged removal of Edison Ehie as Majority Leader was null and void.

A Rivers state-based journalist China Acheru gives a background to the crisis in a post on X(formerly Twitter)

And it appears that indeed the crisis might be related to the godfather vs godson case surrounding the Minister of the FCT, Nyesom Wike and Governor Fubara as some youths took to the streets today chanting “Wike go to Abuja“.
