American philanthropist Melinda Gates has responded to her ex-husband Bill Gates’ remarks about their divorce, which he previously described as the “biggest mistake” of his life.
In an interview with Elle for its 2025 Women of Impact issue, published on March 17, Melinda was asked about Bill’s comments. Her reaction? An eye roll.
“You’ve clearly Googled more than I have,” she quipped, before adding, “Look, divorces are painful, and it’s not something I would wish on any family.”
Melinda, who shares three children—Jennifer, 28, Rory, 25, and Phoebe, 22—with the Microsoft co-founder, admitted that ending her 27-year marriage was one of the hardest yet most important decisions of her life.
Earlier this year, Bill told The Times that his divorce was “miserable” for both of them for at least two years and topped his list of biggest regrets. “There are others, but none that matter,” he said.
Despite their split, Bill noted that they remain on good terms and often see each other at family events, especially with their growing family, which now includes two grandchildren.
Although Bill did not revisit the reasons behind their divorce in his latest remarks, he previously acknowledged having an affair with an employee during their marriage.
