As the rainy season intensifies, medical experts and public health officials are raising alarms over a potential spike in cholera cases across Nigeria. The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) has reported a concerning increase in suspected cholera infections, with over 1,141 cases and 30 deaths recorded across multiple states as of April 28, 2025.

Cholera, a waterborne disease caused by contaminated food and water, thrives in environments with poor sanitation and inadequate access to clean drinking water. Experts warn that the seasonal rains exacerbate these conditions, increasing the risk of outbreaks in vulnerable communities.

Dr. Jide Idris, Director-General of the NCDC, emphasized the urgency of preventive measures, stating, “The rising cases of cholera are a serious public health risk. We are working closely with state governments and health agencies to strengthen surveillance, improve access to oral rehydration therapy, and promote hygiene education at the grassroots level.”

The NCDC has identified 134 local government areas as cholera hotspots and is prioritizing multi-sectoral interventions to curb the spread. Authorities urge citizens to practice proper sanitation, avoid consuming untreated water, and seek medical attention immediately if symptoms such as severe diarrhea and dehydration occur.
