The Department of State Services (DSS) has fulfilled its commitment to compensate a Sokoto-based businessman who was mistakenly shot during a 2016 operation in Jos, Plateau State. In a demonstration of accountability and goodwill, the DSS has awarded the victim a total of ₦20 million and granted him free lifetime medical care at its hospital in Abuja.
The businessman, who was injured due to mistaken identity during a pre-dawn raid targeting a suspected gunrunner, was initially awarded ₦10 million in damages by a Federal High Court in Bauchi in 2018. Upon assuming office, DSS Director-General Mr. Tosin Ajayi not only ensured the payment of the court-ordered compensation but also added an additional ₦10 million to further support the victim.
In addition to financial compensation, the DSS has officially integrated the businessman into its medical care system, allowing him to receive ongoing treatment at no cost. Since arriving at the DSS hospital in Abuja, he has undergone comprehensive medical tests and treatment from top specialists. Reports indicate round-the-clock care in a VIP ward, with the agency ensuring his full recovery.
A DSS spokesperson emphasized that this action reflects the agency’s commitment to justice and human dignity, stating, “This is the third DG since the unfortunate incident occurred, and we are pleased that our leadership has taken decisive steps to ensure the victim is properly compensated and cared for. This demonstrates that security agencies can uphold the law while also showing compassion.”
