Former Akwa Ibom State Governor Udom Emmanuel has been arrested by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) over allegations of a N700 billion fraud.

Emmanuel arrived at the EFCC headquarters in Abuja around 12:30 p.m. today to honor an invitation but was subsequently taken into custody. His arrest follows a petition by the Network Against Corruption and Trafficking (NACAT), which accused him of mismanaging state funds during his tenure from 2015 to 2023.

According to the petition, Emmanuel received approximately N3 trillion from the Federation Account over eight years but left behind a debt profile of N500 billion, along with unpaid ongoing projects worth N300 billion. The former governor is also accused of failing to account for N700 billion.

As of now, the EFCC has not released an official statement regarding his arrest.
