The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has officially announced the arrest of social media activist and influencer Martins Otse, better known as VeryDarkMan. Through a release issued today by the Commission, the arrest follows allegations of cyber bullying, libel, and unauthorized accessing of sensitive data, which are under investigation.

The EFCC testified that the conduct of Otse on the social media platforms has drawn several complaints from parties and institutions claiming to have been assaulted by slanderous and unsubstantiated claims in his videos. The Commission reiterated that as much as freedom of expression is a constitutional right, it cannot encroach on others’ rights and reputations and infringe existing cyber laws.

“Martins Otse is currently with us for further investigation as several allegations against him are being investigated. The evidence gathered so far indicates possible breaches of the Cybercrimes Act. After all legal processes are concluded, he will be charged to court accordingly,” the EFCC spokesperson said.
