Vivian Jenna Wilson, Elon Musk’s estranged daughter, has announced plans to leave the United States following President-elect Donald Trump’s recent re-election victory.
In a public statement, Wilson, 20, voiced her concerns about the country’s political direction and her desire to find a more supportive environment abroad, mirroring the concerns of others worried about the potential impact of Trump’s administration.
Wilson, who cut ties with Musk in 2022, has openly criticized Trump’s policies, particularly those affecting the LGBTQ+ community. To distance herself from her billionaire father, she legally changed her name and gender, a step that she said helped separate her identity from his. With Trump’s return to office, she now feels a stronger resolve to disconnect from the U.S. entirely.
“I’ve thought this for a while, but yesterday confirmed it for me. I don’t see my future being in the United States,” Wilson wrote on Threads, as cited by The New York Times. She added, “Even if he’s only in office for 4 years, even if the anti-trans regulations magically don’t happen, the people who willingly voted this in are not going anywhere anytime soon.”
One of six children Musk shares with his first wife, Justine Wilson, she has previously accused her father of being an absent parent who failed to support her transition. Musk, for his part, has attributed their estrangement to “neo-Marxist” influences at elite educational institutions, which he believes have fueled ideological divides in his family.
In discussions with his biographer, Walter Isaacson, Musk specifically mentioned the Crossroads School for Arts & Sciences in Santa Monica, claiming it “infected” Wilson with what he calls the “woke mind virus.”
He reportedly told Isaacson, “She went beyond socialism to being a full communist and thinking that anyone rich is evil.” Musk has shared that this estrangement has caused him significant pain, more so than even the passing of his first child, Nevada.
Musk, a vocal Trump supporter, is one of the wealthiest individuals globally, with an estimated net worth of $285.6 billion.
