President Bola Tinubu has defended his decision to declare a state of emergency in Rivers State and suspend Governor Sim Fubara, his deputy, and members of the State Assembly.

Speaking on Thursday after the National Assembly ratified the emergency proclamation, Tinubu said the crisis in Rivers had reached a dangerous tipping point, threatening the security of vital oil and gas installations.

He warned that the prolonged instability was undermining Nigeria’s economy and reversing the progress his administration had made since May 2023.

The President commended the National Assembly for approving the emergency declaration, describing it as a crucial step toward restoring stability after a 15-month-long political crisis that paralyzed governance and endangered national economic security.

He specifically praised Senate President Godswill Akpabio, House of Representatives Speaker Tajudeen Abbas, and other lawmakers for prioritizing the security and welfare of Rivers residents over political interests.

Acknowledging their thorough review of classified security briefings, Tinubu emphasized the urgency of the intervention to prevent further escalation.

“The crisis in Rivers State was at a perilous tipping point, threatening the security of vital oil and gas installations and undermining the national economy and the significant progress we have made in the reforms initiated since our administration commenced in May 2023,” Tinubu stated.

“As I detailed in my address to the nation on 18 March, the near-total collapse of governance, threats to federal economic assets, and the risk of widespread violence left no room for hesitation. This emergency measure is a lifeline to safeguard livelihoods, secure critical infrastructure, and restore democratic accountability.”

The President expressed confidence that the six-month emergency rule would empower the newly appointed Sole Administrator to stabilize the state, address systemic breakdowns, and facilitate dialogue among feuding parties.

He reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to working closely with the National Assembly to foster peace, economic resilience, and equitable development across Nigeria.

“Today’s decision exemplifies what our nation can achieve when unity of purpose and patriotism guide the actions of leaders. We remain steadfast in pursuing a safer, more prosperous Nigeria — one where every citizen’s potential is safeguarded and nurtured,” he said.

Tinubu also urged all stakeholders to support efforts to restore peace in Rivers State and lauded Nigerians for their understanding.
