FG suspends import duties, taxes on Essential food items

The Federal Government has suspended import duties and taxes on essential food items to combat widespread hunger and make necessities cheaper for Nigerians.

Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Bashir Adeniyi, announced this at a press briefing on Monday evening, addressing the tough economic conditions and the government’s plans to ease the financial burden on citizens.

Adeniyi noted that global inflation is affecting many countries, including Nigeria, and that removing import duties and taxes on key food items will help make them more affordable.

Additionally, the NCS has introduced new systems to expedite the export of Nigerian goods to international markets, creating new opportunities for farmers, artisans, and entrepreneurs.

Adeniyi assured that these measures will be implemented smoothly to tackle hunger in the country.

He also emphasized the NCS’s commitment to preventing the smuggling of arms and dangerous weapons through Nigeria’s borders, ports, and airports, highlighting the importance of cooperation and maintaining peace to strengthen the country’s borders.

“We are committed to implementing this measure seamlessly to address the problem of hunger in our nation. In these challenging times, let us unite in resilience and cooperation. We extend our heartfelt gratitude to those who have embraced the path of peace and dialogue,” Adeniyi stated.
