A fire outbreak at a spare parts market in the Idumota area of Lagos State has caused significant damage, destroying property worth hundreds of millions of naira.
In a statement on Saturday, Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, the Permanent Secretary of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), confirmed that the fire broke out on Friday night.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the blaze engulfed multiple buildings used as shops for car spare parts. According to the statement, the agency’s Emergency Response Teams from Lekki, Cappa, and the Command and Control Centre in Alausa, Ikeja, were activated following distress calls via the 767/112 Toll-Free Emergency Lines at 10:20 p.m. The teams arrived at the scene at 10:55 p.m. and discovered the affected buildings in flames.
While the exact cause of the fire remains unknown, the inferno resulted in the destruction of goods and properties valued at hundreds of millions of naira. A coordinated response by LASEMA’s Shark and Tiger Response Teams, its Fire Unit, the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, and the Federal Fire Service successfully prevented the fire from spreading to nearby buildings.
Law enforcement agencies on-site managed the crowd to ensure safety throughout the operation. Oke-Osanyintolu reported no casualties or injuries from the incident.
Efforts to completely extinguish the fire, including “dampening down” operations, are ongoing. Meanwhile, salvaging valuable items from the affected shops continues as recovery operations progress.
