First Pig Kidney Transplant Recipient Discharged from Hospital

Richard “Rick” Slayman of Weymouth, Massachusetts, the pioneering recipient of a genetically modified pig kidney transplant, has been discharged from Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) after a groundbreaking surgery.

The 62-year-old patient, who had been battling end-stage kidney disease, underwent the historic procedure at MGH, a leading teaching hospital affiliated with Harvard Medical School in Boston.

Following the successful four-hour surgery on March 16, Mr. Slayman’s transplanted kidney, derived from a genetically edited pig, is functioning well, eliminating the need for dialysis.

In a statement, Mr. Slayman expressed his gratitude, describing his discharge as “one of the happiest moments” of his life.
