France hold on to claim a 1v0 winning EURO start against Austria

France had to hold on to kick off their EURO 2024 campaign with a 1-0 win over Austria.

Kylian Mbappé enjoyed an early opening for Les Bleus as his shot was tipped into the side netting by Patrick Pentz.

Ralf Rangnick’s side also went close to breaking the deadlock as Mike Maignan denied Christoph Baumgartner at close-range.

But the former world champions finally broke the deadlock when Maximilian Wöber headed Mbappé’s cross into his own net.

Mbappé spurned a golden opportunity to extend the advantage when he fired a shot horribly wide midway through the second half.

The Real Madrid star later went off with a broken nose as his side held on to claim second spot in Group D behind the Netherlands.
