The Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG) has directed its members to join the indefinite nationwide strike called by Organised Labour, starting on Monday.
In a statement, NUPENG General Secretary, Afolabi Olawale, confirmed the union’s commitment to ensuring total compliance with the strike directive.
The strike, declared by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC), is a response to the Federal Government’s refusal to adopt the proposed new minimum wage.
Afolabi expressed the union’s concern and frustration with the government’s insensitive attitude towards negotiating a new minimum wage, amidst socio-economic policies that have impoverished workers.
He instructed union leaders at all levels to ensure compliance with the strike directive, stressing the need for solidarity among workers.
The strike aims to pressure the government to address the plight of Nigerian workers and adopt a new minimum wage.
