The Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS) is excited to announce the appointment of Funke Akindele, a renowned, multiple award-winning actress, movie producer, and director, as its new National Goodwill Ambassador (GWA) for Nigeria. This distinguished appointment acknowledges Funke Akindele’s exceptional efforts in the fight against HIV, her steadfast advocacy, and her dedication to raising awareness and supporting the global goal of ending AIDS as a public health threat by 2030.

Funke Akindele’s career began with her role in the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA)-sponsored television series I Need to Know, which focused on adolescent reproductive health, rights, and HIV. Since then, she has gained worldwide recognition, earning millions of fans and accolades for her unforgettable roles. Often referred to as the “Queen of Box Office” in Nollywood, Funke holds the top three spots for the highest-grossing Nollywood films of all time, showcasing her influence and prominence in the industry.

Over the past 20 years, Funke Akindele has consistently used her platform to break barriers, advocate for social impact, and drive positive change. As UNAIDS’ National Goodwill Ambassador, she will support efforts to eliminate vertical transmission of HIV, combat HIV-related stigma and discrimination, and promote HIV prevention throughout Nigeria.

Nigeria has made significant progress in the fight against HIV in the last two decades. In 2023, approximately 2 million people were living with HIV in the country, with an adult prevalence rate of 1.3% among individuals aged 15-49. The number of new HIV infections decreased from around 130,000 in 2010 to 75,000 in 2023, marking a 42.3% decline over 13 years. Additionally, 1.6 million of the 2 million people living with HIV in Nigeria are currently receiving treatment.

Despite these advances, challenges persist, including addressing stigma, discrimination, and ensuring equitable access to prevention and treatment services across all regions.

“We are excited to welcome Funke Akindele as UNAIDS’ National Goodwill Ambassador for Nigeria,” said Dr. Leopold Zekeng, UNAIDS Country Director for Nigeria. “Her powerful voice, extensive influence, and unwavering commitment to social change make her a crucial partner in our efforts to combat HIV and support those living with the virus in Nigeria. We look forward to collaborating with her to foster positive impact and advance progress in the fight against AIDS.”

The nomination of Funke Akindele followed close collaboration with the National Agency for the Control of AIDS (NACA), which has expressed gratitude for UNAIDS’ efforts in securing this important partnership for Nigeria’s HIV response. Funke Akindele’s role as National Goodwill Ambassador will be essential in mobilizing efforts for HIV prevention and ensuring that key messages reach broader audiences nationwide.

The official announcement of her appointment was made during the World AIDS Day commemoration in Abuja on December 3, 2024, at an event led by the United Nations Resident Coordinator for Nigeria, Mr. Mohammed M. Malick Fall.
