House of Representatives Moves to Establish Bola Ahmed Tinubu Federal University of Nigerian Languages

The House of Representatives has passed the first reading of a bill to establish a new federal university focused on promoting Nigerian languages and cultures.

Sponsored by Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu and eight others, the proposed university will provide higher education opportunities in Nigerian languages.

The university’s objectives include teaching and training Nigerian language professionals, providing language services and consultancy, conducting research, and participating in outreach and community services.

The President will serve as the university’s visitor, with powers to conduct visits and remove council members for misconduct or inability to perform duties.

The bill will undergo a second reading and public hearing to gather stakeholders’ input.
