“Hypocrisy is Smelling!” Mr Macaroni Calls Out Ben Murray-Bruce Over Praise for Akpabio

Popular Nigerian comedian and activist, Mr Macaroni, has taken former senator Ben Murray-Bruce to task over what he labeled as blatant hypocrisy following Murray-Bruce’s recent praise for Senate President Godswill Akpabio.

Murray-Bruce, known for his self-styled “common sense” advocacy, sparked controversy after posting on X (formerly Twitter) in support of Akpabio. In his post, he described Akpabio as a man of “unimpeachable good character” who had been “investigated in and out” and emerged “clean as a whistle.”

He further wrote, “Nigeria needs stability and men of ability, and it behoves us as a nation to tread with caution at this critical time of our national life. Institutions such as the Legislature should not be trifled with because of partisan considerations.” Murray-Bruce added, “I will not stand idly by while some persons try, both home and abroad, to destroy an institution I was once proudly a part of… Innuendo, hearsay, and dog whistles will always come. But they can never be so powerful that they will take preeminence over facts.”

However, Mr Macaroni was quick to remind the former senator of his past remarks. The comedian dug up old tweets from 2018 where Murray-Bruce had harshly criticized Akpabio, accusing him of trying to subvert the country’s political process and even suggesting his visa should be revoked.

Sharing screenshots of the old tweets, Mr Macaroni wrote, “Nigerian politicians only care for themselves alone! It’s never about the people!! Only about their pockets. Your hypocrisy is smelling, sir!”

He further posted another throwback screenshot from 2018, where Murray-Bruce had once again condemned Akpabio, sarcastically captioning it, “Mr Common Sense 🙌🏾🙌🏾.”

The exchange has reignited public criticism of Nigerian politicians, with many social media users applauding Mr Macaroni for his fearless stance and calling out what they see as political double standards.

Murray-Bruce, once revered for his advocacy on accountability and transparency, now faces backlash over what many perceive as a shift in his principles—raising questions about the sincerity of Nigeria’s political elite.
