The ex-wife of the Ooni of Ife, Naomi Silekunola; Chairman of an Ibadan-based broadcasting station, Oriyomi Hamzat; and the Principal of Islamic High School, Basorun, Abdulahib Fasasi, were arraigned on Monday, January 27, before the Chief Magistrate Court in Ibadan, Oyo State.

They face four charges related to conspiracy, murder, manslaughter, and negligence in connection with the deaths of 35 children during a stampede at a Christmas funfair on December 18, 2024.

Previously, the court had placed them under a Holden charge, which was later contested. Their counsel argued that such a charge is not recognized under Nigerian law, and they were subsequently granted bail.

The case, which was scheduled for mention, was adjourned by the Chief Magistrate until March 24, 2025.

Hamzat’s counsel, Dapo Akinosi, explained to journalists: “Today’s session was meant for mention because the initial arraignment was based on a Holden charge, which is not valid under Nigerian law. The defendants were remanded due to that charge. Afterward, we applied to the High Court, where bail was granted. Legal advice has now been provided, and the correct information has been filed, but they have not yet been served.

“We came to court today to have the charge withdrawn here. Since their plea has not yet been entered at the High Court, we requested a longer adjournment for proper proceedings, including the plea-taking at the High Court, before the case is concluded at the Magistrate Court.”
