IGP Egbetokun Calls Fainting of Suspects in Court a “Staged Act,” Reaffirms Police Commitment to Welfare

Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has described the fainting of six suspects before their court arraignment as a staged act meant to draw negative attention.

He emphasized that medical assistance was immediately provided, reflecting the police’s dedication to the welfare of those in their custody.

On Friday, 76 suspects, mostly minors who appeared visibly malnourished, faced arraignment connected to the #EndBadGovernance protest. Six collapsed in court and were swiftly attended to.

Following arraignment, each minor was granted bail set at N10 million, a decision that has drawn both national and international criticism.

In a statement issued on November 1 and signed by Force Spokesperson Muyiwa Adejobi, Egbetokun underscored that under Nigerian law, individuals who meet the age of criminal responsibility are accountable for their actions, regardless of age. He said:

“Today, six suspects abruptly left and fainted in court, an incident clearly orchestrated to attract media attention. Medical care was promptly administered, demonstrating our commitment to their welfare.”

Egbetokun highlighted that the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) prioritizes justice balanced with sensitivity to individual rights, particularly for young people. Drawing a comparison with international practices, he noted, “In jurisdictions like the United Kingdom, age does not exempt individuals from legal accountability for serious offenses, though each case is treated with empathy and human rights considerations.”

He also detailed the charges against the suspects, which include terrorism, arson, and treasonable felony, among others, adding that the NPF has followed strict legal protocols to ensure fairness.

Urging the public to remain unbiased, Egbetokun reassured that the police would handle the case with transparency, stating, “We encourage citizens to view this matter objectively, as we are committed to a fair and just legal process that respects human dignity.”
