The Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has urged Nigerians to direct complaints about police officers’ unprofessional conduct to the Police Complaints Response Unit, instead of airing them on social media.

Mr. Egbetokun made this call on Monday at the PPROs/Police Communication Experts’ Conference in Asaba, Delta State. He emphasized, “We urge the public to refrain from using social media to report police misconduct and instead utilize the Police Complaints Response Unit.”

The police chief explained that using social media to address grievances often results in misinformation, which undermines the force’s credibility. While acknowledging that social media platforms allow Nigerians to voice their concerns, he expressed concern that unverified information could lead to misinterpretation.

Mr. Egbetokun further highlighted that the Police Complaints Response Unit offers a more structured and accountable mechanism for addressing complaints, stressing the importance of promoting transparency and accountability within the police force.
